Sectional 1: Judge With A Heart

At the Level 4 session, we saw a different side of USAG Judges -- compassion. Competitive gymnastics can be emotionally demanding. Our new Level 4 girls were getting a taste of the pressure that comes with qualifying meets. Sarah had ran into some trouble half way through her Floor routine. Unsure how to handle the problem, she left the floor, visibly upset. One of the judges came over, put her arm around her and reassured her. (This was nothing like the petty types in the movie "Stick It!")

Such a disturbance can break the focus of gymnasts who are up next. Sarah's team mate, Paige, did not let things rattle her. Paige went out and performed a nice routine, earning an 8.40. The judges let Sarah try her floor routine again. Finding that spark of a champion inside her, Sarah went out, performed her entire routine cleanly. She scored an 8.85, taking third place! Both Paige and Sarah posted qualifying scores for States. Way to go girls!

Both Paige and Sarah demonstrated the courage to succeed today. And, we saw that a little compassion can do amazing things.
