The Nation's Capital Cup, March 5, 2011
The Nation’s Capital Cup was held the weekend of 5 – 6 March 2011 at the Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. This was the 33rd year this meet was hosted by the MarVaTeens of Rockville, MD. Our Optional Team is proud to join the list of famous gymnasts such as Mary Lou Retton, Brandi Johnson, and Dominique Dawes who have competed in this meet.
The Level 7s kicked off the meet bright and early Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M. The Level 10s competed in the noon session and the Level 8s competed in the 3:00 P.M. session. The judging and the competition were tough. Really cool medals were awarded for the individual events and the AA. The medals were in the shape of the meet logo (left) and were red, white, and blue! Round, red, white, and blue trophies (larger version of the medals) were awarded for Team placements. The results are as follows:
Overall, the meet gets a thumbs up for being just a 1/2 hour commute from the airport, nice host hotel, a spacious clean venue just 5 minutes from the hotel with electronic score boards, bleacher seating, plenty of parking, and lots of restaurants nearby; and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing for those who cared to venture into Washington. The Capital, monuments, and Smithsonian were favorites among the parents, but DC Cupcakes was definitely the favorite among the gymnasts. You may have seen the “cupcake sisters” show on TLC or heard about the 10,000 cupcakes they made for the troops in Afghanistan. If not, check out the show sometime. DC Cupcakes is a great example of a small business that has grown to such fame that hundreds of people wait in line for hours to buy a cupcake. Sweet! Since Nicole competed in the late afternoon session we didn’t get to the store, but we are very grateful to Ellie who brought back a cupcake for Nicole who saved me a bite! It was awesome!
